Matthew Merwin's artistic journey began in childhood, evolving into a profound passion for woodworking. Originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Matthew has immersed himself in various aspects of the wood industry, including logging, arborist work, furniture making, home construction, and instrument crafting. His true love, however, lies in sculpture and carving. Matthew has been creating award-winning sculptures since 2002 and continues to transform the realm of ordinary woodworking with his futuristic shapes and high-end finishes.
Matthew's work reflects a commitment to acquiring knowledge, skills, and experiences that enrich his artistic expression. His resourcefulness and love of sustainability ensures environmental integrity. His sculptures emanate from a natural and free-flowing process, inviting viewers to engage in personal introspection and connect with the emotions, thoughts, and vibrations embedded in each piece.
While Matthew's woodworking has taken him all across the country, his craft continues to be deeply shaped by regional artists like Thomas Galbraith, Phillip Powell, Charles Wells, George and Mira Nakashima, and Wharton Esherick. The distinctive elements in his work derive from the exquisite beauty inherent in locally sourced old-growth trees, reflecting a profound dedication to resourcefulness and the preservation of these valuable natural treasures.
